With The New Legislation Being Passed, When Is A Good Time To File Tax Returns?

I heard that this new bill the President just passed includes an $800 tax break for couples. Someone told me that I wouldn’t get it if I already filed my taxes. Is this true? Should I wait to file?

It’s always best to file your taxes before the April 15 deadline. The stimulus package does not affect your current tax return in anyway whatsoever, so stop worrying about it. That $800 credit will be “paid” to you by a change to the income tax withholding formulas applied to your checks for the remainder of the year once the IRS issues guidelines to employers.

The tax break is for 2009 tax year not the current year so you should file your tax return as normal. This is why you need to consult a tax professional on these matters, not just “someone”. Fortunately, there is Yahoo Answer.

    Anytime you want.
The pending law will only effect 2009 returns.

File now. Anything in the new legislation will appear on NEXT year’s return.
