Last I checked it was Titanic. Has another moved into the number one spot? Please back up the claim with a source. Thanks!
Bonus: just out of curiosity, which movie has the number 2 slot?

Depending on how you count the box office receipts.
In straight receipts, Titanic is still the highest grossing movie in the United States, earning just over $600 million in theatrical release. Here is the list from Box Office Mojo:http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/dom…
#2 on this list is Star Wars (1977).
In terms of receipts adjusted for inflation, Gone with the Wind is the highest grossing movie ever in the US, earning nearly $1.3 billion in terms of today’s dollar. Here is that list:http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/adj…
#2 on this list is Star Wars (1977).
Interesting other fact — the best attended movie in the US of all time is believed to be D.W. Griffith’s 1915 Birth of a Nation, which is believed to have been seen in movie theaters by almost 50% of the American population. Box office receipts were not tracked in 1915 — if they had been, it would appear high on the adjusted list, though probably not as high as Gone with the Wind, which has been released in theaters several times over the years.

    James Cameron’s Avatar (2009).
No. 1 of all time; and I believe it will be for another decade.

  7. Jason says:

    Avatar beat out Titanic recently.
    Top 10 are:
    1 Avatar Fox $2,638.9
    2 Titanic Par.
3 The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King NL
4 Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest BV
    5 The Dark Knight WB
6 Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone WB
7 Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End BV
8 Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix WB
9 Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince WB
10 The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

  8. Lake says:

According the the Motion Picture Association of America (www.mpaa.com) the top 5 grossing movies are:
    1. Titanic – $600.8 million
    2. Star Wars (the original – 1977) – 460.9 million
    3. Shrek 2 – 436.4 million
    4. ET – The Extra-Terrestrial – 434.9 million
    5. Star Wars, Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace – 431.1 million
The same figures pop up on something called the Motion Picture Data Base (www.imbd.com) and are much easier to find. You have to spend the better part of half an hour negotiating through the mpaa site to find those figures – mostly negotiating around anti-pirating pages. Sheesh!!!
By way of unasked-for editorial comment: Titanic would have been so much better had DiCaprio not been in it. A very unsympathetic character!
It also seems I read somewhere a few months ago – but couldn’t find it anywhere – that Gone With The Wind – when the totals were adjusted for inflation – was the top grossing flick of all-time. Can’t remember where I saw it or heard it, but for some reason it sticks out.
I’m just glad to see two Star Wars movies in the Top 5.

  9. Nelle says:

I believe as of the past few weeks the number one is James Cameron’s Avatar and number two is Titanic also by James Cameron

  10. Jason says:

Return of the King is number 2.
That’s world wide, domestically Star Wars is number 2.
Adjusted for inflation however Gone With The Wind takes the top spot domestically with Star Wars still at number 2.
In all fairness to the older films, the overseas markets are much bigger now than they were then, so the domestic numbers may be a fairer basis for comparison.

  11. hubbard says:

    I’m guessing it’s still Titanic.
The second seems to be The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
